Tornado Sweeps Through Grand Blanc Township

GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, MIAt approximately 1:20 a.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, a tornado touched down in Grand Blanc Township near Creasey Bicentennial Park in the area of Porter Road and traveled east along Reid Road toward Dort Highway, continuing into the City of Grand Blanc and eventually into Atlas Township

Several residential and commercial buildings sustained significant damage and many were left without power due to down power lines. Grand Blanc Township Fire Department responded to a gas main break from a commercial building off Dort Highway. Gas was successfully shut off at 9:40 a.m. by Consumers Energy.

Grand Blanc Township Police Department reported no injuries or fatalities occurred due to the tornado.

“The Grand Blanc area was struck by a devastating tornado last night. Our hearts go out to all those affected by this storm. We are very grateful that we did not have any reported injuries or fatalities from such a horrific tornado,” said Scott Bennett, Township Supervisor. “Thank you to our Township Fire and Police departments who have been assisting residents throughout the night and are ready to help wherever needed.”

Grand Blanc Township Police and Fire Department remain on the scene, assessing the damage, responding to emergencies and assisting with ongoing cleanup efforts. We ask that all residents avoid Dort Hwy between Grand Blanc Road and Reid Road, Reid Road between Porter Road and Grand Oak Drive, and Creasey Bicentennial Park until further notice.
